Photo: Getty ImagesWhen clients worry about how they’re going to afford a big or unexpected medical bill, financial adviser Neal Van Zutphen can relate. Maureen Lamb, chief executive of Medical Bill Support LLC, recently worked with a client who had verified before a procedure that his lab work and doctor were all in-network. And they should try appealing unexpected medical bills with the billing office and the insurance company. If consumers get a surprise out-of-network medical bill, they should check their state laws to see if any protections apply, says Ms. Lamb. However, once it shows up on a credit report, medical debt can do a fair amount of damage to a credit score.
