How relationships on Vanderpump Rules are artificially authentic

Despite being a devoted viewer of Bravo’s shows about Housewives, both real and symbolic —the New York, Beverly Hills and Atlanta varietals are my trash-TV of choice — I hadn’t seen Vanderpump Rules until this year, creating much tension in my Bravo-specific friendships. However, by the time its seventh season concluded with a three-part reunion last week, I was all caught up. The show has a particularly janky premise: a sort-of spin-off of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Vanderpump Rules is about the servers, hostesses and bartenders who work for RHOBH’s Lisa Vanderpump, the British queen bee who floats in an iridescent-pink cloud of ‘80s glam, and who is smarter and probably richer than most of the other Housewives. But, I also like the Housewives shows because I want to warm myself in the glow of their often-absurd lives and style and lifestyles. The Vanderpump cast, though, have until recently lived, or pretended to live, in gross, small apartments; there is more vomit and fast food than anyone’s version of glamour.
