Jack Dorsey has pledged to donate $1 billion to help fight the coronavirus. To my mind at least a few hundred million of that figure came from the work of journalists. Those who work for media companies have enriched social media publishers like Twitter, which Mr Dorsey co-founded, while newspapers and their websites battle to survive. For some newspapers, Covid-19 will be a fight too far and for the journalists that staff them it will mean unemployment and in many cases a career change once this passes. It’s just that a great amount of the value is accrued to third parties.
