Less reps with heavy weights tends to increase muscle mass, while more reps with light weights increases muscle endurance. The more sets you do, the more both your muscle strength and endurance increases, but performing too many reps in a set will have diminishing returns. On average, in each set, perform eight to 10 exercises that conditions all the major muscle groups, beginning with the larger muscle groups first. To build muscle endurance: Do one to three sets at a weight that gets you fatigued at 12 to 15 reps. Since you know what a set is, in my next column, I’ll discuss drop sets, super sets and giant sets.
