The nation might have emerged from the disruptive surge of the demonetisation exercise but the question - how much of the demonetised Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes came back into the system? RBI governor Urjit Patel today deposed before the Parliamentary panel for finance. During the deposition members of the panel from opposition parties repeatedly asked the governor to divulge the quantum that came back. The RBI governor was categorical, he said that the amount cannot be stated as the verification process was still on. On November 4, 2016, four days prior to the demonetisation announced by the PM, currency with the public was Rs 17.97 trillion.
