My mother bought this book for me at a time when I was fighting my way back from the proverbial mid-life crisis. One without the other would not make a book memorable enough for me - both must be present. The understanding, or feel, for a character can only come from the way they interact with the plot. We all like to write about iconic Kiwis and I have a great respect for the books they have written. Like most authors, I have a “day job” so I write at nights, on weekends and occasionally at stupid o’clock in the morning when inspiration or clarity unexpectedly comes my way.
