Christchurch fire restrictions begin on Saturday and water restrictions loom as the city continues baking in early summer heat. Last Monday, the city used 254 million litres of water, equivalent to 678 litres for every person in the city. From midnight Saturday, a fire permit will be needed for anyone wanting to light an open air fire in Christchurch city the and Selwyn, Hurunui and Waimakariri districts. Richard Neale, of the Christchurch City Council, warned that long, dry grass could cause fires to spread quickly.
