As one who has worked closely with the civil aviation industry in the Asia-Pacific region for 32 years, I know it is critical for Malaysia’s aviation safety to be elevated to Category 1 from Category 2. I believe the assessment should determine whether civil aviation authorities are meeting ICAO safety standards, not FAA regulations. It was the first time since 2003 that Malaysia’s aviation safety was downgraded. Category 2 means the regulatory body is deficient in one or more areas, including technical expertise, qualified trained personnel, record keeping, and/or inspection procedures. CAAM, previously known as the Department of Civil Aviation, was formed in 2018.
