Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Airlines aircraft declared a fuel emergency, issuing a "mayday, mayday, mayday" call to air traffic control. At the time, the runway was closed following an earlier incident involving T'way Airlines flight TW687 from Jeju, South Korea. A Hong Kong Airlines spokeswoman said its aircraft was instructed to enter a holding pattern due to the runway incident.
