Honey crop one of the worst in 10 yearsA beekeeper checks hives on Otago Peninsula during a season when many hives have struggled to produce enough honey to support their own bee populations, let alone a surplus for sale. The 2016-17 season has proved to be the poorest for honey production in a decade, according to Apiculture New Zealand. Pilley said some commercial operators did not expect to harvest a honey crop at all this season. Carne Clissold, of Glass Brothers near Gore, estimates his honey crop will be down about two-thirds on an average season. The late recovery meant his honey crop was up slightly on last season which was well below average.
