Tougher enforcement of social distancing rules is being planned by the government as ministers consider new curbs on socialising. A new plea for people to keep their distance from others will be launched and Boris Johnson could tighten restrictions on meeting other people as soon as tomorrow. After a spike in coronavirus cases in young people, Matt Hancock, the health secretary, praised curfews as a way of reducing rates and warned it was “inevitable” deaths would rise as infection spread to the elderly and vulnerable. A further 2,420 cases were reported today, the third successive day of more than 2,000 cases.
