NEW YORK — Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel was being remembered Sunday at a private service in New York City. A hearse was seen outside the Orthodox Jewish synagogue and mourners were arriving mid-morning. “He carried a message universally, he carried the Jewish pain, the message of Jewish tragedy to the world but he took it way beyond. Wiesel and his wife Marion were honoured by the League with the Jabotinsky Award Courageous Jewish Leadership in 2013. Millions learned directly about the Holocaust through Wiesel, who began publishing work in the 1950s.
