The condition, called Castleman disease, was so rare that doctors at the hospital in Raleigh had no experience with it. Over the next few years, Dr. Fajgenbaum alternated between extended periods of relative health and frightening relapses. That year, in 2011, Dr. van Rhee secured a rare exception to try it on Dr. Fajgenbaum. “I’m on the couch watching TV, and Dave is just cranking away on Castleman,” Dr. Mitchell recalled. Dr. Fajgenbaum, his health improving, returned to the other challenges that were hampering progress in the field of Castleman disease.
