The Central Hinds cricket team are in the unusual position of heading into their season without their star bowler, but captain Anlo van Deventer is far from fretting. Rosemary Mair last month became the first Central Hind to play in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League and as a result will miss the first six rounds of New Zealand’s national Hallyburton Johnstone Shield that begins at Pukekura Park this Saturday and Sunday against the Auckland Hearts. Coupled with the retirement of White Ferns bowler Kate Baxter, there will be a hole in the Hinds attack, but van Deventer said 20-year-old Monique Rees was poised to step up and fill Mair’s shoes. The Hinds have beaten the Hearts in three of their past four one-day encounters, including the 2019 national Final that the Hinds won by 39 runs at the same ground. The Stags will meanwhile also open their one-day season at Pukekura Park with the first round of The Ford Trophy on Sunday 29 November against the Otago Volts.
