Hinahina Bridge reopens in the Catlins after $3.6m investment


Labour List MP Dr Liz Craig, Jim Berney and Southland MP Joseph Mooney cut the ribbon at the opening of the Hinahina Bridge. Berney’s father and grandfather worked on the previous two Hinahina bridges and his grandfather cut the ribbon on the second bridge in 1957. The new $3.6 million Hinahina Bridge in the Catlins was officially opened at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday. However, speed and weight restrictions were in place until further work to the approaches is done. He reminded motorists to respect the weight and speed restrictions until the bridge could be opened to all traffic.
