From Mang'u, he joined the United States of America based Harvard University where he studied Physics and Mathematics. He returned to Kenya in 1962 and joined the Nation Media Group (NMG), where he became a reporter, feature writer and columnist at the Daily Nation newspaper. In 1965, at the age of 25, he became the first African editor-in-chief of the Daily Nation, succeeding Graham Rees. The revered journalist also established the Nairobi Times, a modelled form of the established New York Times and Times of London. The outlet was, however, reduced to a tabloid and was sold to Kenya African National Union (KANU), which rebranded it to Kenya Times.
