A lone sugar-maple sapling, leafless and spindly, stands stoically in a corner of Centennial College’s parking lot. A rather ordinary sight, but this tree means more than meets the eye — it was planted Friday to mark the first anniversary of the launch of the Highway of Heroes Living Tribute campaign, a project aiming to reforest the roughly 170-km stretch of Hwy. The campaign aims to plant 117,000 trees — one for every Canadian soldier killed in combat since Confederation. “(The trees are) a tribute to our fallen and it’s a reminder of the stories . “As we travel the Highway of Heroes for generations from now, we’ll be reminded of the sacrifice and the price of peace.”
