High hopes may provoke opposition to Cairn plan

Cairn has applied to build nearly 400 apartments and houses but its plans may not measure up to local residents’ expectations CHRIS RATCLIFFE/GETTY IMAGESCairn Homes’ expanded plans to develop a site in north Dublin may face local protests over their scale, a senator has warned. The application, which comprises 377 flats and eight five-bedroom houses on a 4.4-hectare site, was brought before An Bord Pleanála at the end of last month. Cairn, one of the state’s most prominent developers, had expressed interest in developing the site at Griffith Avenue in Marino towards the end of 2017. It acquired the grassland space, near the junction with the Malahide Road, for €106 million from Argentum Property in 2016. Over time, the planned scope of the construction has risen from 101 units in September 2015 to 320 in 2017 and now to 385, at a maximum height of eight storeys.
