High Deductibles Aren't Just An Obamacare Phenomenon


As workers peruse their employer’s health benefits packages this fall, it’s increasingly likely they’ll be enrolled in a plan with a high deductible. The push toward high deductible health plans has hit nearly 25 million American workers as cost-shifting at U.S. employers escalates, according to a new analysis funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "While there has always been a lot of attention drawn to the high deductible plans on the ACA marketplace, the high deductible plan is truly becoming ubiquitous in the commercial sector,” said Katherine Hempstead, senior advisor at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Last year, another 2.2 million people enrolled in high-deductible health plans offered through an employer. This year, 75% of employers offered high deductible health plans , according to Aon’s database of about 1,300 employers.
