The High Court sentenced Qazi Faruk Ahmed, founder chairman of Proshika, to one-month civil imprisonment on Tuesday for defying a court ruling that asked him to hand over his office to the incumbent chairman and the governing body of the NGO. According to the case dockets, another High Court bench in 2012 upheld a trial court verdict that ordered Qazi Faruk to hand over his Proshika Tower office in Mirpur, Dhaka to the incumbent authorities, who removed him from his position as the chairman of the NGO in 2009 over allegations of multiple accounts of irregularities. Faruk, instead, took possession of the Proshika Tower office using muscle power the same year, which, the court was told on Tuesday, is a direct violation of the previous High Court order. After learning about the development, the same High Court bench issued a ruling and asked why it should not send Qazi Faruk Ahmed to civil imprisonment and why it should not order the authorities concerned to freeze his tangible-intangible assets. The court also directed a number of respondents to come up with an answer in four weeks.
