Heroic firefighters rescue trapped elderly man in house fire


A fire broke out in a council flat in Port Chalmers on Thursday night. Volunteer firefighters rushed into a burning flat, using touch to find an elderly man trapped in his bathroom. The fire broke out in Currie Court, a Dunedin City Council flat on Currie St, Port Chalmers, about 7.15pm on Thursday. Port Chalmers chief fire officer Steve Hill said on arrival the volunteer crew found ''flames coming out the windows on both sides''.
