A herd of cows were hit by a KiwiRail train on Tuesday in Southland. A herd of cows that got out of their paddock through a weak spot in a fence were hit by a train on Tuesday night, resulting in 16 being killed. Two bulls and 16 dairy heifers were killed as a result of being hit by the train, a council spokeswoman said. KiwiRail Executive general manager operations Siva Sivapakkiam said the train was a general freight train travelling from Dunedin to Invercargill.
