David WooHerb Kelleher, the legendary cofounder of Southwest Airlines, died yesterday at age 87. "WHEN WE FIRST began to fly outside Texas I got a letter from a congressman," recalls Southwest Airlines Co.'s cofounder and chief executive, Herb Kelleher, with a chuckle. "He wrote: 'Herbie, you're going to destroy Southwest Airlines, flying outside Texas.' All of Southwest's flights are under two hours in flying time, and many are under an hour. When Lamar [Muse, Southwest's chief executive from 1971 to 1978] left, a lot of people said Southwest Airlines is over, it's kaput, because Lamar Muse is Southwest Airlines.
