Vehicles have been moving at a snail's pace on the 70-kilometre stretch of the highway from the east of the Bangabandhu Bridge to Gazipur's Chandra since Tuesday night. Tangail Traffic Police Inspector Ershadul Haque said many vehicles were taking the highway instead of Paturia after three piers there were closed down. "Moreover, a number of Dhaka-bound cattle-laden trucks from the northern districts have added pressure on the lane towards Dhaka," he said.Traffic and Highway Police were trying to ease the congestion, he added.
