Heatwave sweeps north India as it awaits arrival of monsoon


NEW DELHI: North-west India may continue to bear the brunt of searing heatwave conditions over the next two days, said India Meteorological Department, as the region awaits the arrival of the southwest monsoon. The monsoon, which currently lies over East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, is expected to advance into the north-western region around July 3. In its latest update, the weather department said the heatwave conditions persist over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, with maximum temperatures rising upto 45°C in some areas. The heatwave turned severe in certain isolated pockets in West Uttar Pradesh, where the actual maximum temperature was recorded above 45°C. East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, many parts of West Uttar Pradesh might receive monsoon rains during 2-4 July, as monsoon progresses.
