EDITORIAL: Former Southland Girls’ High School student Heather Simpson has once more been drawn into an important “make it happen’’ role by a Labour administration. In response to its Covid-19 border security and testing issues, the Government has called in the army and Simpson. The army has a particular mana and in recent years has worked long enough in peacekeeping roles to have developed aptitude for soft-skilled persuasion. It is also worth noting Chris Hipkins’ “I own that’’ acknowledgement that the buck stops with him as Health Minister during the testing botch-ups at the border. To that end calling in a larger chunk of the army, and a seriously seasoned Southlander, hardly seems excessive at this point.
