Having a whale of time off Dunedin coast

Having a whale of time off Dunedin coastHamish McNeilly/Fairfax NZTwo whales have been surfing off Dunedin's coast. The pair – believed to southern right whales – were at times 100 metres off St Clair beach on Thursday morning. This gave them their name after they were deemed the "right" whale to catch by whalers. Newborn southern right whales were between 4.5m and 6m in length, while adults reached 11-18metres. "We have fielded concerned calls before from people worried whales were going to strand because they were behind the breakers."
