In Gaza, Hamas praised the attack as a “heroic operation” and said Abu Shkhaidem was one of its members. Since the May war, Israel and Hamas have conducted indirect talks through Egyptian mediators aimed at cementing a long-term cease-fire. Sunday’s incident was the second of its kind in Jerusalem’s historic Old City in recent days. But shootings around Jerusalem’s Old City and its holy sites are relatively rare, and Israel maintains a sizeable security presence in the area.
