Tuesday's weather caused damage to the town's hydro power intake, as it was blocked by logs and other debris. "We've had the power out [in previous storms] but we haven't had it out for this long," the Haast resident of over 25 years said. She had contacted the power provider New Zealand Energy - the only provider in Haast - to ask them to turn an emergency generator on to provide power to the township, however, she said she had been told the town would "drain too much power". She was also told the power was hydro power intake was hoped to be fixed this afternoon which would return power to the town.
