NEW DELHI: Chromebooks and tablets led to the revival of the global PC market in Q1 2021, posting a growth of 274.6% and 51.8%, respectively, according to the latest data from market tracker firm Canalys Chromebooks, led by HP, achieved a remarkable first-quarter shipment volume of 12 million units, while 39.7 million tablet units were shipped during the same quarter, the data showed.HP posted a growth of 633.7% on-year, propelling its shipments past the 4-million-unit mark. Huawei , however, saw a decline of 27.9% on-year, primarily due to the breakaway of its former Honor brand into a separate entity, Canalys said. But it secured a position within the top five vendors in the market.“At a time when the overall PC market is facing a supply crunch, the vendors that have strong tablet offerings have been able to squeeze out even greater gains from the increased demand for screen access and remote productivity brought about by the pandemic,” said Canalys Research Analyst Himani Mukka.Canalys said it expects this trend to continue as tablets gain importance in growing sectors such as education as well as for driving digital transformation.Lastly, Lenovo maintained its lead in the total PC market (including desktops, notebooks, and tablets) shipping 24 million units. Apple came second with 22.1 million shipments of Macs and iPads. HP secured third place with 19.3 million units, leaving Dell and Samsung to make up the rest of the top five.
