A 42-year-old purchasing manager and a 31-year-old Dutchman have been sentenced to four months behind bars for setting fire to a rubbish bin in Mong Kok in February this year. Purchasing manager Tang Chun-keung, and Edgar Willem Aart De Bruin, a Hong Kong visitor, earlier pleaded guilty to one count of arson. They appeared before Magistrate Leung Ka-kie at Kowloon City Magistrate’s Court today. Magistrate Leung said that the two should be handed a deterrent sentence, since arson is a serious crime that may endanger public safety. She initially proposed a sentence of six months, before reducing it by one third to credit their plea and the HK$700 damages they paid the government.
