The Japanese consulate has confirmed that a Hong Kong-based Japanese freelance reporter was released on Monday, following his arrest on August 31. The Hong Kong-born, but Japan-raised reporter in his 30s, has been living in Hong Kong for four years. Earlier in November last year, a Japanese student from Tokyo University of Agriculture who had entered Hong Kong for sightseeing was taken away by police near the Hong Kong Polytechnic University but was released. The university was turned into a fortress by young anti-government protesters at the time, who barricaded themselves inside. There was an intense standoff between protesters and police, including running battles and clashes involving bows, arrows, hard objects, and tear gas.
