The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday ordered issue of notice to the State government on a PIL petition seeking direction to ensure proper care, food, water, and round-the-clock medical facilities in elephant camps run by forest authorities. A Division Bench comprising Justice John Michael Cunha and Justice H.T. Narendra Prasad passed the order on the petition filed by city-based lawyer N.P. It was alleged that though there are guidelines on providing food and medical care to elephants in such camps, they were deprived of these owing to mismanagement by officials and staff. The elephants are not being properly treated in the camps due to issues like non-payment of salaries, non-sanctioning of leaves, and failure to fix service cadre of employees, the petitioner contended.
