Nazrul surrendered to a High Court bench of Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman on Tuesday and pleaded for bail. Nazrul is facing two cases—one over defamation and the other under Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act—for allegedly criticising Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan on Facebook. The post from Nov 18 claims 90 out of 92 sailors appointed at the Chittagong port are residents of Madaripur. The case under the ICT Act was filed with Madaripur Sadar Police Station by Minister Khan’s nephew Syed Asaduzzaman Minar. The court has granted Nazrul bail for 10 weeks in the defamation case and no arrest warrant would be issued against him until police filed a probe report in the ICT case, said Deputy Attorney General Moniruzzaman Kabir, who represented the state on Tuesday.
