Guns handed in by end of September

Kiwis with soon-to-be illegal firearms will have until the end of September to hand them over to the Government. The Government's first lot of gun law changes will come into effect by April 12, less than a month after the Christchurch terror attack, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has announced. The bill bans military-style semi-automatics (MSSAs), assault rifles, and several modifications which which can make legal guns illegal. Between April 12 and September 30 those who already own the illegal firearms would be provided amnesty and could hand over their firearms to police for a fair price with a "buyback" scheme. After that amnesty period anyone in possession of one of the illegal firearms would face tougher penalties.
