Gun absolutists need to stop making specious arguments


“[Fill in blank for any gun safety measure] wouldn’t have prevented this particular attack.” That would be an argument for doing more, not less (e.g. You, Mr. NRA, might not want to prevent the maximum number of gun deaths because you value gun owners’ convenience (e.g. “It’s really a mental health problem.” We do have a mental health problem, but conservative lawmakers who raise this to deflect attention from guns rarely support increased funding for mental health. However, we find the blanket argument against any gun safety law to be wholly unpersuasive and irresponsible. And finally, there is no excuse not to robustly pursue school safety and mental health measures that have nothing to do with gun safety.
