Guiltless, giant, collective roadkill

India continues to lead the global league table on road accidents and fatalities — with 1.51lakh deaths and 4.67 lakh accidents in 2018. This is an increase over the 2017 figures of 1.48 lakh deaths and 4.65 lakh accidents. India is a signatory to the Brasilia Declaration to halve the number of death and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020. These figures provide unequivocal justification for significantly higher penalties for traffic violations. Greater emphasis on road safety education and awareness campaigns and greater community involvement in ensuring road safety are other parts of the solution.
