Estevez and his crew–rescue diver Dabbie Olimpo, diver Christian Talde and boat captain Rachel Belaza–patrol the Albay Gulf and remove plastic wastes washed to the shore. “Communities in the neighboring towns whose river channels connect to the river system in Legazpi contribute to the plastic pollution. Albay Gulf will be cleared of plastic wastes starting this month until October as the wind direction changes during the southeast monsoon or habagat, Estevez added. The Philippines, through the Pasig River, is ranked 7th highest in the world for plastic wastes dumped into the ocean. At least 4.8 to 12.7 million metric tons (of the 300 million metric tons produced globally) of plastic now reach the oceans each year.
