Residents were evacuated and the army bomb squad called in after a hand grenade was found at a suburban Christchurch home. Neighbours said at least 12 nearby properties were evacuated while bomb disposal experts X-rayed the grenade to determine whether it was live. A member of the NZDF bomb disposal unit briefed residents on the discovery, showing them a replica of what the device looked like. A spokesman for NZDF said an ordnance disposal team confirmed the grenade was inert and removed it from the scene.
