'Great American Baking Show': Can Mary Berry Crack The U.S. (Where Paul Hollywood Failed)?

The Great British Bake Off has gone from strength to yeasty strength in Britain, becoming the BBC’s biggest show bar none – and then getting sensationally snatched by a rival network. Tonight (Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016) Mary Berry is giving it one more go, as her Great American Baking Show debuts on ABC, with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m./8c. Unlike the rather butch Paul Hollywood, whose vibe is more Top Gear than Miss Marple, Mary Berry embodies the very spirit of British baking – kindly, warm, grandmotherly, lovely-but-sensible hairdo, ditto her trademark jackets. The first U.S. version of The Great British Bake Off came in summer 2013, on CBS, entitled The American Baking Competition. Of the two British judges, it starred Paul Hollywood rather than Mary Berry – which is a bit like casting Robin but not Batman.
