Cleveland, Toronto’s opponent in the AL Championship Series, won more games than the Blue Jays and had a better run differential and Wins Above Replacement total in the regular season. The graph below shows how the two teams’ hitters compare by WAR as measured by FanGraphs.com, position by position. Travis’s season didn’t start until May, forcing the Blue Jays to rely on Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney at the keystone. Neither team’s WAR total in left field over the season says much about what to expect during the playoffs. The Blue Jays’ deficiency at right field has to be the biggest surprise here with superstar Jose Bautista occupying that spot.
