Grandfathers Against Racism: ‘Ireland is not full, we have never been’

Twelve men from across Ireland gather together every Tuesday in Dublin to peacefully protest against the spread of hate and racism – and they say you are never to old to make a standEvery Tuesday, a group of 12 grandfathers gather at The Spire in Dublin with a banner that describes exactly what they are: ‘Grandfathers Against Racism’. On January 23, eight of them braved Storm Jocelyn, clutching their banner tight on either end, smiling on and explaining their mission to onlookers. “We’re not useless old folks,” says Kevin Cronin (82) who brought his friends together around five years ago, “We felt like people our age, who are healthy enough to do so, need to stand up for what’s right. Young people in this country should always be reminded of Irish history, what we had to go through and think about all the countries that took us in. If we keep thinking about that, we might be more open to the people coming into our country.”
