KUALA SELANGOR: The government plans to make it compulsory for all Class B fishing trawlers to be fitted with the Automatic Identification System (AIS). The decision follows the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry's finding that at least half of the country’s 2,630 registered Class B fishermen who were provided the AIS free-of-charge have failed to have them installed. He was speaking to reporters after handing out a cost-of-living allowance to Kuala Selangor fishermen and launching the 'Fresh Sea Fish at Low Price' programme. "We will make it compulsory for the AIS to be installed on Class B fishing boats. For the initiative, the federal government approved a RM27 million allocation to install the AIS on 2,630 fishing trawlers.
