Lamu Governor Issa Timamy wants 75 per cent of job opportunities at the new Lamu port reserved for county youth. Last week, 85 youth from Lamu were awarded certificates on seafarer jobs after successfully completing the training by KMA. The Lapsset project includes a 32-berth port, transportation hubs for rail, highway and international airports in Lamu, Isiolo and Lodwar, an oil pipeline from South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia to Lamu Port, an oil refinery and three resort cities in Isiolo, Lamu and Turkana. Speaking in Lamu on Tuesday, he said the county government has instituted a training programme where youth are sponsored for training in various skills required for Lapsset jobs. Timamy urged the national government to speed up the construction of the new port, saying it will improve Lamu’s economy.
