Gore looks towards its retailing future

A survey shows some Gore residents are concerned about the downsizing of the town's H&J Smith's department store. The Gore District Council carried out a district consumer survey to help and businesses understand changing consumer needs, values and aspirations following the Covid-19 lock down. John Hawkins/Stuff Gore District Council Community Strategy Committee chairman councillor Richard McPhail is leading the council’s post COVID-19 business resilience response. Early in June the company confirmed the closure of several stores, and announced the Gore store would be downsized into a smaller store next door, where it would only sell womanswear. “People want to be able to do more of their shopping locally and have been keen for Gore businesses to look at ways to fill these needs,'' McPhail said.
