Google’s Sentient AI Chatbot Explained: Why Did the Suspended Engineer Say That?

A new Washington Post piece recently shed light on the story of a Google AI chatbot gaining sentience, as told by engineer Blake Lemoine, who has now been sent on leave by the Mountain View-based company. The AI bot in question is called LaMDA, which is an acronym for Language Model for Dialogue Applications. With the help of a fellow collaborator, he corroborated evidence to prove to the head honchos at Google that the company's AI bot had gain sentience. This discussion between a Google engineer and their conversational AI model helped cause the engineer to believe the AI is becoming sentient, kick up an internal shitstorm and get suspended from his job. Soon after the post surfaced online, Google placed Blake Lemoine on place administrative leave for failing to comply with the company's confidentiality policy.
