They contain substances called phenols that are recognised as damage-preventing antioxidants that help keep our cell membranes healthy. In addition they are a good source of vitamin C for helping to prevent winter colds. There are over 2000 varieties of plums worldwide with at least 45 varieties available in New Zealand. It's important to realise that most varieties need a polleniser but if there's not room for two trees in the garden, some self-fertile varieties are available. It's recognised that plums have great health value and it's worth noting that even when plums are out of season they can still provide the same benefits.
