A Golden Bay farm manager has been convicted after being found guilty of ill-treating cows in his care. Forty-five-year-old Steven John Wells, a farm manager at Maratoa Farm near Takaka, was convicted of six counts under the Animal Welfare Act after a four-day trial the Nelson District Court last week. His offending took place in 2015 and 2016 when he broke the tails of cows, hit them with a metal pipe, kicked them, kneed them and punched them. Wells will be sentenced in the Nelson District Court on April 30.
