Though we must reduce global CO2 emissions, I hope she can think more laterally about some opportunities that could come our way. Should huge discoveries of natural gas be made in existing fields and permitted areas (which she says she won't touch), then New Zealand natural gas could be exported to coal dependent countries and make a significant reduction in global emissions. When electricity generators switch from coal to natural gas as their fuel source, this reduces their emissions by 50 per cent. This is where NZ natural gas can play a bigger part. Not only would it help reduce global emissions but the economic return for New Zealand would help our own transition.
