A 12-year-old girl, who was allegedly set on fire by her aunt for stealing a mobile phone at Khainput village in Shibpur upazila on Friday, night died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Saturday. Aziza Begum, a class-V student and daughter of Abdus Sattar, was first taken to Narsingdi District Hospital with severe burn injuries and then shifted to DMCH where she died around 1:30am. Rehena Begum, mother of the victim, alleged that her sister-in-law, wife of Saudi expatriate Abdus Salam, and the younger brother of Abdus Sattar, beat Aziza accusing her of stealing a mobile phone and threatened her to burn alive around 4pm on Friday. Hearing her groan, neighbours and family members rushed to the spot and rescued her beside her uncle’s house with severe burn injuries around 9pm. Officer-in-charge of Shibpur police station Syeduzzaman said no written complaint has been filed in this connection.
